While Bangladesh may seem small compared to its giant neighbors India and China, this democratic state has some of the highest population densities in the world. Bangladesh is one of the world’s least developed countries with 31.5% of its 157,826,578 people living under the poverty line. Geographically, it is situated in the Ganges Delta, which the country’s large agriculture sector depends on to employ around half of the population.
In recent times, the country has boosted economic growth to 6% annually. Still, the unemployment rate is 4.1%, while underemployment is at 40%. It is the world’s second-largest garment exporter.
About 64.2% population resides in rural areas and 35.8% in urban areas of Bangladesh. The literacy rate is 72.8% and the average Bengali has 10 years of schooling.
The fertility rate in Bangladesh is 2.17 births per woman. The maternal mortality ratio per 100,000 live births is 176. About 32.6% of children less than 5 years of age is going through Malnutrition in the nation which is a serious problem.
According to Human Development Reports, Bangladesh ranks 139 in the Human Development Reports and ranks 119 in the Gender Inequality Index of the United Nations Development Programme among 180 countries.
Along with all of these issues, Bangladesh is also dealing with a huge wave of refugees from Myanmar. In what is widely called a genocide, some one million Rohingya, a Muslim-majority ethnic group, have entered Bangladesh since 2017 to escape violence in Myanmar.
