The Embassy of the United States of America is calling for applications for the United States President´s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Small Grants Program. The program funds initiatives that focus on HIV prevention, care and support in Namibia. The grant amount is between USD 3600 and USD 21,600 and applications have to be submitted until the 31st of January 2019.
Who can apply for the PEPFAR Small Grants Program?
The PEPFAR Small Grants Program supports projects in all the 14 regions of Namibia. Organizations who want to apply should be community-based organizations, faith-based organizations or learning institutions that are registered in Namibia. Ideally, the organization should have an own bank account.
What can be funded by the PEPFAR Small Grants Program?
The PEPFAR Small Grants Program specifically funds efforts to prevent and combat AIDS and HIV in adolescent boys and young men and among key and priority populations. The guidelines do not specify which activities can be funded, but the activities should address the following discussion points:
- Discuss HIV risks (i.e. alcohol abuse, multiple concurrent partnerships, inconsistent condom use);
- Reject myths about HIV transmission
- Encourage safer-sex strategies for sexually active youth
- Discuss and encourage HIV testing and counseling and link to locally available HIV counseling and testing
- Discuss with parents and communities’ strategies to raise awareness about HIV risks for adolescent boys and young men, and improve adult-child communication about sexuality
- Discuss voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC), HIV care and treatment and TB testing and treatment
- Promote condoms: how to use them correctly and consistently, how to negotiate using them, where to get them, and improve access to them
- Discuss harmful norms related to sex and gender; reduce stigma and discrimination associated with HIV and prevent gender-based violence; promote gender equity
- Encourage safer-sex strategies for sexually active adolescent boys and young men
What to keep in mind when Applying for the PEPFAR Small Grants Program?
To be eligible for the small grant, you need references from your past work. Make sure you get good references that convince the readers of your proposal that you are a reliable partner. For this grant, the embassy specifically looks for creative initiatives that include for example skill building initiatives, sports, information technology or performing arts.
