The application process is open for locally registered Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). Registration documents need to be provided at the time of submission of a full proposal. Individuals cannot apply.

The GEF Small Grant Programme in Malaysia basically funds projects in the following areas:

- land degradation
- international waters
- persistent organic pollutants

The application for the GEF Small Grant Programme in Malaysia is divided into two steps. Until the 28th of February, applicants need to submit short concept proposals. Only chosen organizations are later invited to submit full proposals.
In the provided form for the concept note, applicants have to give information about the organizational capacity, problem statement, project location and beneficiaries, objectives, activities, expected results and a preliminary budget. The project should run over the course of 18 to 24 months. As supporting documents, you have to submit your registration documents, an organizational chart, and banking information.
