Tips for Applying to the Ambassador’s Fund for HIV/AIDS Relief (AFHR)-Tanzania

The U.S. Embassy Tanzania’s President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has opened its call for applications for The Ambassador’s Fund for HIV/AIDS Relief (AFHR). PEPFAR is the U.S. Government’s approach to save the lives of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS around the world. AFHR grants open every year to support projects that provide care, support, and economic opportunity to communities affected by HIV/AIDS.

Who can apply for what?

The PEPFAR Tanzania Small Grants is open for registered non-profit Tanzanian organizations such as Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs), or Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

The amount of money an organization can receive in 12 month of a project can be between $5,000 and $25,000 USD

PEPFAR Tanzania invites proposals for projects that:

  • Improve treatment literacy in the context of Tanzania’s transition to Tenofovir, Lamivudine and Dolutegravier (TLD)
  • Address stigma and discrimination
  • Introduce innovative solutions for preventing and accessing support related to gender based voilence(GBV)
  • Reach men with testing and linkage to treatment
  • Engage faith communities on any of the above points

Targeted beneficiaries of the PEPFAR Tanzania Ambassador’s Fund for HIV/AIDS Relief (AFHR) for this proposal include the following groups:

  • Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVCs)
  • Key Populations (KPs)
  • Men and Young Males
  • People Living with HIV (PLHIV)
  • Adolescents Girls and Young Women (AGYW) (with an emphasis on AGYW 10-14 years of age)

It is important to follow the instructions carefully and meet the requirements provided by the donor. Incomplete applications are rejected straight away, therefore don’t forget to check the following:

  • Your proposal needs to have clear goals and objectives
  • All documents must be English
  • The budget should be submitted in Tanzanian shillings and is calculated on the daily exchange rate if awarded
  • The application is for FY2019 (not previous years)
  • The application must send electronically via email (please do not mail your application form)
  • No changes must be made in the Application form and must be in its original word.doc format
  • Include Organization name, Project title and a brief 200 word summary of the project in the body of your email (its required for your application to be complete).
  • The application must be sent electronically via email (please do not mail your application form)
  • Two references that can verify the organization’s successes and the project coordinator’s ability to organize and manage the project

Application review criteria

Each application will be evaluated and rated on the basis of the evaluation criteria outlined below out of a possible total of 100 points.

  • Organizational capacity (25%)
  • Quality of project idea, goals, and objectives (25%)
  • Community Support (10%)
  • Budget (20%)
  • Monitoring and evaluation plan (10%)
  • Sustainability and Innovation (10%)

Prepare before you send your application

Your work becomes easier if you prepare the documents that you have to attach to your proposal before you click the send button ahead of time. Check this list carefully and make sure you can provide everything that is requirede. The following do documents are needed:

  • Completed AFHR_Application_2019
  • Completed AFHR budget timeline template (find the template here)
  • Letter of support/recommendation from a district or council representative
  • Pro-forma invoices/quotes for all items for which you are seeking AFHR funding
  • Organization’s NGO registration’s copy
  • Organization’s TIN registration or tax exemption certificate’s copy
  • If the project is an income-generating activity please provide a business plan too
  • A detailed construction blueprint, if applicable

Furthermore, Proposed projects should be completed in 12 months from expected project start date that is September 2019.
