Tips to Apply for Grants to Support Public Private Partnership Development in West Africa

The West Africa Biodiversity and Climate Change (WA BiCC) Program is implemented by Tetra Tech ARD on behalf of USAID. Currently, it is looking for applications for the Public-Private Partnership Development Program in West Africa. The grant amount ranges from US$ 50,000 to 300,000. The deadline to apply to this opportunity is the 31 May 2019.

Who can apply for the Public-Private Partnership Development Program in West Africa?

Applicants must work in one of the following countries: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Ghana. The following types of organizations are eligible:

  • Private enterprises or firms (profit is not allowed under USAID grants);
  • Civil society organizations (CSOs);
  • Community-based organizations (CBOs);
  • International, national, regional, and local organizations;
  • Non-US NGOs;
  • US NGOs (up to $100,000);
  • Private foundations and universities;
  • Business associations

What can be funded by the Public-Private Partnership Development Program in West Africa?

Projects that want to apply for the Public Private Partnership Development Program in West Africa should work in one of the following areas:

  • Combat Wildlife Trafficking
  • Increase Coastal Resilience to Climate Change, and
  • Reduce Deforestation, Forest Degradation, and Biodiversity loss in selected coastal and forest landscapes across West Africa.

Some examples of the strategies that could be used to fulfill the goals of the project are the following:

  • PPPs between eco-tourism companies, NGOs supporting eco-tourism activities and other private sector entities interested in supporting eco-tourism;
  • PPPs between buyers of NFTP or agricultural commodities grown by communities living around protected forest areas that focus on sustainable NRM while also improving the livelihood of forest populations.
  • PPPs that support income-generating activities that have a lesser impact on wildlife or forest resources.
  • PPPs that support the development and adoption of new technologies that support local communities while also supporting sustainable NRM, community forest management, CWT and even community awareness of the importance of protecting protected forest areas while also supporting local community livelihood enhancement.
  • PPPs that support the promotion of intensive agroforestry systems and linkages to market outlets

To apply for the Public Private Partnership Development Program in West Africa, organizations need to send a Concept Note as specified on the website with a maximum of 3 pages. Organizations with a high promise will be invited to submit a full proposal in a second step.

Make sure that you thoroughly read through the guidelines before you submit – when working with USAID there is very little leeway for errors. Also, make sure that you will be able to submit all requested documents in the case you should be invited to submit a full proposal. One of the main factors for the evaluation of your concept note is if your approach is scalable and if you have the management skills to implement it. Make sure to show exactly this.
