The project background is an important part of every proposal. It can be very similar to the project rationale or project justification. It shows your donor that you did your homework and that your project is planned well. But where can you get the information and data for your project background? And how does one actually look like?

Here you have an example project background for India. If you are planning or working in India then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant data according to the region and place.

Project Background of India

India, the world’s largest democracy and second-largest country by population, occupies the greatest part of South Asia. India got its independence in the year 1947 from the British Commonwealth and the Republic of India was established in January 1950. It is the second-most-populous country, after China, and it has three of the most populous and cosmopolitan cities in the world; Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta), and Delhi.

India is an ethnically diverse country. Though it has more than a dozen major and hundreds of minor linguistic groups, the largest number of people speaks Hindi, which is also the official language used by the government.

The CIA Factbook shows that the estimated population of the country is 1,296,834,042, with 34% of the population living in urban areas and 66% in rural areas.

As one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, it scores 67.23 and ranks 77 in ease of doing business. It is also recognized as one of the G-20 major economies and a member of the BRIC countries.

As of 2015, about 38% of the land area is counted suitable for agriculture, which is one of the most important parts in the Indian economy, providing huge employment. The next biggest economic area is retail, which makes up almost a quarter of the nation’s GDP. More recently, India has been a breeding ground for the IT sector, contributing an appreciable amount to the country’s overall GDP. However, according to trading economics, the unemployment rate in India has increased to 6.10 percent in 2018 from 3.52 percent in 2017.

In between the years 2005 and 2015, the average life expectancy has risen steadily from 64 to 68 years in the country. Moreover, it has been polio-free and free of tetanus since 2014 & 2015 respectively. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has played an important role to reduce the spread of communicable diseases. According to Path Inda, the neonatal mortality rates have improved markedly with the drop from 57 deaths per 1,000 live births to 37, between 2005 and 2015. But despite all the progress and numerous efforts made by the government of India for improving the health situation and living status of citizens, the impact has not been as profound as anticipated. It is still lagging behind in some important sectors such as health, education, and the social sector (PRF: EB). As stated by Avert,  India has the third largest HIV epidemic in the world, it still represents a large percentage of the global burden for many diseases, and it needs improvement in terms of quality and accessibility of health care.

Here you have an example project background for Nepal. If you are planning or working in Nepal then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked country between India and China, two rapidly changing countries, with China in the North and India in the South, East, and West. The capital of Nepal is Kathmandu. The Constitution of Nepal, adopted in 2015, establishes Nepal as a federal secular parliamentary republic, divided into seven provinces and 77 districts.

According to the CIA’s 2018 report the country’s population was estimated to be 29,717,587. The population density is 204.43 people/sq. km. 19.7% of the population lives in urban areas while 80.3% still live in rural areas.

Health and education both are the prime concern for the country. The overall literacy rate (for the population age 15 years and above) is 59.6%. The number of schooling shows impressive progress. The HDR-UNDP  2018 report shows that in 1990, mean years of schooling for the global adult population was 5.8; by 2017 it had increased to 8.4. The country has made improvement in the maternal mortality rate that has declined from 539 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1996 to 258 in 2017. The fertility rate is 2.1 births per woman. However, the percentage of stunted children under five years of age is 36% and needs to be improved. Also, child marriage is still a prevalent problem in the country. The percentage of women ages 20–24 who were first married or in a union before the age of 18 is 40%.

Nepal remains one of the poorest countries and has one of the slowest-growing economies in Asia. The country’s economy is mainly based on agriculture. According to Trading Economics in 2017, the GDP from agriculture was only 254673.10 NPR Million. The ease of doing a business score in Nepal is 59.63.

Nepal is undergoing a historic transition toward a federal and secular republic. This brings windows of opportunity for the country to further reduce poverty, raise the income and achieve the SDG 2030 agenda.

Sample Project Background for Ghana

In the year 1957, Ghana became the first country to gain independence in Sub-Saharan Africa. It lies in the west coast of Africa, sharing borders with Togo to the East, la Cote d’Ivoire to the West, Burkina Faso to the North and the Gulf of Guinea, to the South. Ghana is considered one of the stable countries in Africa with various ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. It is often referred to as Island of Pace in Africa. The country is favored by natural resources which have 7 national parks. Also, 41.0% is covered by forests.

Agriculture, oil, gold, industrial diamonds, petroleum, silver, salt, limestone etc. are some of the major economic sources of Ghana. Moreover, agriculture is considered as an engine of growth and job opportunities to Ghanaian people. More than half of the workforce is employed in the agricultural sector, which is one of the leading fields for enlargement of the economy.  The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Ghana was worth 47.33 billion US dollars in 2017. The country exports gold, oil, lumber and especially coca in huge amount adding to the GDP.

The country’s expenditure on health sector has been increasing within the past 10 years but still, it is lacking health care infrastructure. The country is not able to address health issues such as malaria, HIV-AIDS, women’s health issues, children’s health issues and issues of water supply, especially outside of urban areas.

Ghana ranks 140 in the Human Development Index and 131 in the Gender inequality index.

The country has the fastest growing economy in Asia. As a result, in 2016 it was promoted to a Lower Middle-Income country from a Least Developed Country.  The country’s economy is mainly based on agriculture and tourism. The GDP from agriculture is 9401.20 KHR billion (2017). In addition, textiles production and extraction of natural resources like timber, rubber, limestone, and phosphate are also other sources of income generation.

While Cambodia is one of Asia’s fastest growing nation, the ease of doing business score lies at 54.80.

It shows your donor that you did your homework and that your project is planned well. But where can you get the information and data for your project background? And how does one actually look like?

Here you have an example project background for Malawi. If you are planning or working in Malawi then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add updated data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked country, covering the area of 11484 sq km. It ranks among the least developed countries in southeast Africa. It shares borders with Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Malawi got its independence in the year 1964. After 3 decades it held multiparty presidential and parliamentary elections in 1994.

Limited natural freshwater resources, land degradation, and desertification are the major environmental issues faced by Malawi today. The country is prone to natural hazards such as floods, droughts, and earthquakes. Furthermore, resources such as land, water, and forests are decreasing due to rapid population growth, threatening the durability of the country’s major income sector, which is agriculture. 84.7% of Malawians  living in rural area are engaged in smallholder subsistence farming. Malawi is an agricultural country, it heavily depends on rain-fed agriculture, especially staple crops. Climate change, poor infrastructure, policy inconsistency, macroeconomic instability, rampant corruption, high population growth and a poor education system are the major challenges for economic growth. The GDP of the country in 2017 accounts  to USD6.30 billion.

Malawi is one of the world’s most affected countries by HIV-AIDS. More than one million children are orphans due to the disease. Child and maternal health have been improving in Malawi, but it is less progressive in reducing its high fertility rate. Parental care and skilled birth assistance are received by many mothers and vaccinations to children are provided to both the rural and the urban areas. However, fertility decline in Malawi is in a slow manner, i.e. 7 children per women in 1980s to 4.5 children per women in the present day.

The business performance is moderate, scoring 59.59. Also the country holds the 111th position for doing business.

Here you have an example project background for Zambia. If you are planning or working in Zambia then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant updated data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Zambia

The Republic of Zambia, a landlocked country situated in south-central Africa. Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe are the neighboring countries. The capital-Lusaka is in the south-central part of Zambia, with highest levels of urbanization in Africa.

The country’s population is 16,445,079 which is said to be tripled by 2050 due to the rapid population growth. The landlocked country has experienced rapid economic growth but still 54.4% population living under the poverty line. The density of population counts 22.995 sq./km. Moreover, the fertility rate is 4.9 births/woman, which is comparatively high with other countries.

About 56.5% population is living in the rural areas which result in the high infant and maternal mortality rate that follows 43.8 deaths per 1,000 live births and 224 deaths per 100,000 live births respectively. Along with this, the prevalence of stunting is found to be 40 %. Because of poor water treatments, air pollution, and high HIV AIDS prevalence,  the average life expectancy is 62.3 years.

The concern of state towards health facilities is the must. Poverty, Unemployment and unpredictable natural disasters always drag down the economic growth of Zambia. Indeed, agriculture is the main occupation but it only contributes 7.5% to the total $ 25.81 billion GDP. Due to the patriarchal society, the gender inequality ranked 125 and HDI ranked 144.

The business environment gradually progressing which scores 65.08 however the unemployment rate still remains 7.79%. The corruption rank of Zambia is 96 among 180 countries.

It shows your donor that you did your homework and that your project is planned well. But where can you get the information and data for your project background? And how does one actually look like?

Here you have an example project background for Malaysia. If you are planning or working in Malaysia then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Malaysia

The Muslim-majority nation of Malaysia is one of the fastest developing countries in the South-East Asia region, and on a global scale too. Situated in the South China Sea and with Indonesia, Singapore, and the Philippines as close neighbors, Malaysia distinguishes from them through its thriving economy and noticeably high human development index.

Indeed, the country’s 31,381,992 inhabitants enjoy a life expectancy of 75.2 years along with an average of 13 years of schooling and a 94.6% literacy rate. Combined with the country’s GDP of $930.8 billion, this amounts to an HDI index of 0.802. Malaysia’s gender equality mirrors this high HDI with its 0.287 scores on the Gender Inequality Index

The Malay population is mainly located around the country’s cities, as 76% lives in urban areas and only 24% lives in rural areas. This explains the relatively small part agriculture plays in the Malaysian economy and the important contribution of the service industry to it. Moreover, this can also be seen to account for the 99.4% of births in the hospital, which, in turn, translates to a relatively low child and maternal mortality rates.

The prevalence of the service industry is further emphasized by the country’s ease of doing business which scores at 78.43. This, therefore, does not seem to be hampered by its 62nd position in terms of transparency.

One area, however, is still lagging behind. Indeed, despite the low percentile of poverty and unemployment, respectively at 3.8% and 3.4%, malnourishment remains an issue, as 13.7% of children still suffer from it.

The project background is an important part of every proposal. It can be very similar to the project rationale or the project justification. It shows your donor that you did your homework and that your project is planned well. But where can you get the information and data for your project background? And how does one actually look like?
Here you have an example project background for Zimbabwe. If you are planning or working in Zimbabwe then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Zimbabwe

Geographically, it is known as a landlocked country in South-Central Africa. The state is smaller than California. Botswana is in the western part of the nation, Zambia on the north, Mozambique on the east, and South Africa on the South. Zimbabwe’s history is very interesting with so many historical stories. After a 15 year long civil war, the country finally got independence in 1980. The land is known as earliest settlers. Due to the desperate poverty and climatic challenges results in the height of the crisis in mid-November 2008, the inflation rate was 79.6 billion percent. The government initiated the land reform to eliminate the income inequality: distributing the land of rich white commercial farmers for redistribution to poor and middle-income people in Zimbabwe but it results in the violence and still land is not accessible to the neediest low-income farmers.
The total population 14,030,368 of Zimbabwe is still suffering the economic and political issues. Indeed, the country’s human development index is 0.535, ranking it 156th in the world. About 72.3% of Zimbabwean people are under the poverty line and going through miserable situations. People here only live for 61.1 years on average.

Though the literacy rate looks good both gender male and female enjoy the equal education, 86.5% Zimbabwean are pretty liberal to get the education. However, the ratio of child mortality is 31.9 deaths per 1,000 live births and maternal mortality ratio 443 deaths per 100,000 live births. It follows 11.2% of children are suffering from Malnutrition. About 67.8% of the population is living in rural areas and they observe the old fashioned way of Agriculture. Agriculture and Mining are the major economic activities so there is no alternatives income diversifying sources. The nation’s GDP accounts only $34.27 billion where agriculture contributes only 12% to GDP.

This struggling economy is, moreover, plagued by incredibly high corruption, Zimbabwe being listed as the most corrupted country in the world ranking 157 among the 180 countries.
The country’s ease of doing business scores 50.44, seems doing the business isn’t favorable and difficulty to intervene to better the population’s living conditions. Climate change comes along with drought and lack of water. Different water borne diseases like Cholera and Dysentery are the major consequences of Global Warming. The development projects specially designed to address these issues will help the state to run smoothly.

It shows your donor that you did your homework and that your project is planned well. But where can you get the information and data for your project background? And how does one actually look like?

Here you have an example project background for Namibia. If you are planning or working in Namibia then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Namibia

Namibia is located in the south-western part of Africa. Namibia shares the border with Angola, Zambia, Botswana, and South Africa. Almost struggling for 25 years, the Namibians achieved its Independence in 1990. During the 1900s, the diamonds were discovered and many Europeans immigrants migrate into the country. Black Africans are the major population in Namibia and rest are mixed, racial groups. The most of the areas are desert, hot and dry.

The country’s population 2,533,224 is suffering from prolonged periods of drought. Due to the worst climate, agriculture isn’t favorable. Mining and Agriculture are the main occupations though people are still relying on subsistence farming.  28.7% of the population is still living under the poverty line. Similarly, the report of the Global Economy shows that the unemployment rate is 23.33 %. The consequences are reflected in the health and life standard of Namibian people,  only live for 63.7 years on average reported by World Health Rankings. Moreover, health facilities aren’t accessible to half of the population living in rural areas. The ratio of infant mortality rate is 33.8 deaths per 1000 live births and maternal mortality rate counts 265 deaths per 100,000 live births. About 13.2% of children are suffering from Malnutrition. The different development projects should be developed to address these prevailing problems.

Limited natural freshwater resources, land degradation, and desertification etc. are the major environmental issues facing by Namibia today. According to UNAIDS welcomes new survey data showing that 77% of all adults living with HIV in Namibia are virally suppressed. The Namibia Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (NAMPHIA) survey included 24 000 people from 0–64 years old.

Poverty, Unemployment and Worst Climate are the major challenges of economic growth. The GDP accounts $14.15 billion. The major economic activities are based on mining the diamonds and importing the raw materials. Agriculture sector contributes only 6.7% and industry 26.3% to the GDP. According to the UNDP report, the HDI ranked 129 scoring 0.647. The country is also listed as one of the corrupted countries while ranking in 53rd position among 180 countries.

The business performance is moderate, scoring 65.08. The country holds the 87th position for doing the business. Here you have an example project background for Ethiopia. If you are planning or working in Ethiopia then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Ethiopia

The Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia is a landlocked country located at a north-eastern part of Africa. Its topography ranges from deserts along its eastern border with big mountains, plateaus, and lake which is divided by the Great Rift Valley. It shares the borders with the Republic of Kenya in the southern part and the Republic of Eritrea in the northern part. Ethiopia regains its Independence on May 5, 1941, from Italy.  The country observed its first constitution in 1994, and Ethiopia’s first multiparty elections were held in 1995.

Like its neighboring countries, Ethiopia suffers a lot from natural challenges such as drought and unpredictable flooding. More than 4000 civil society organizations are working to deal with the social and economic challenges in Ethiopia.

With 80% of Ethiopia’s populations living in rural areas, and the remaining 20% in urban ones. Because of the majority of the population in rural areas, only 27.7% of births happen in hospitals that result in high child mortality rate 49.6 deaths per 1000 live births and 353 deaths per 100,000 live births which need more attention in health care facilities in rural areas. Life expectancy in Ethiopia is 57 years for males and 60 years for females, which shows that the quality of healthcare needs further attention. General quality of living quite low as about 5.8 million children under 5 years (38 %) are suffering from chronic malnutrition, according to the most recent Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). Ethiopia’s HDI value for 2017 is 0.463 which ranked the country in the low human development category.

According to the IMF, Ethiopia was one of the fastest growing economies in the world from 2004 through 2009.  Despite fast growth, GDP per capita is one of the lowest in the world. The country’s main sector contributing to is from agriculture which increased to 573.10 ETB Billion in 2016 from 274 ETB Billion in 2015.

Access to education is a challenge in many sub-Saharan African countries. Inequality in Education still exists in Ethiopia which results in 9 years of schooling years for male and 8 years for the female. Ethiopia scores 0.502 on the Gender Inequality Index. Though Ethiopia has witnessed one of the largest declines in child marriage rates, from around 60% to around 40%, two in every five girls are married before their 18th birthday and nearly one in five girls marries before the age of 15.

The country ranked as the most corrupted country holding its position 107th among 180 countries.
