Sample Project Background

Traditionally, Nepal is a patriarchal country and norms and traditions only change slowly. Even though there has been some progress in the last years, the situation for women in Nepal is still very difficult. Women are generally responsible for the household tasks and taking care of the children and elderly – while at the same time also contributing to the household income. Particularly with the rising number of male family members seeking work in foreign countries, the responsibilities of women are growing disproportionately high compared to their privileges.

Domestic violence is a big problem in Nepal: In a survey from the Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal in 2011, 28 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 49 stated that they had experienced violence from their partner at least once in their partnership. 14 percent had even experienced it in the last year.

The country ranks 115th in the Gender Inequality Index by the United Nations Development Program. The percentage of women in the age group from 20 to 49 who were first married or in union before the age of 18 is 48.5%.

The fertility rate has dropped a lot in the last decades and is 2.2 births per women now. The maternal mortality rate per 100,000 births is 258. The proportion of births attended by professional health personnel is only 55.6%.

The proportion of seats held by women in the National Parliament in Nepal is 30%. At the moment, the country has a female president, but the office mostly holds ceremonial status. In general, the number of women in powerful positions in politics and business is low.

While the gap between male and female literacy used to be very high, the country is moving to close that gap. The adult literacy rate for women is 65.7%, but the literacy rate of individuals between 15 and 24 years is 77.5%. Despite this progress, still a lot of work needs to be done in this field.
