Happy International Women’s Day!
Today, the world celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. We take this opportunity to write a sample project background for projects in the sector of women’s issues in Nepal for you. If you plan to write a proposal in this area, feel free to use this sample project background and adjust it for your own purposes. We wish you all the best for your proposal!
Sample Project Background
Traditionally, Nepal is a patriarchal country and norms and traditions only change slowly. Even though there has been some progress in the last years, the situation for women in Nepal is still very difficult. Women are generally responsible for the household tasks and taking care of the children and elderly – while at the same time also contributing to the household income. Particularly with the rising number of male family members seeking work in foreign countries, the responsibilities of women are growing disproportionately high compared to their privileges.
Domestic violence is a big problem in Nepal: In a survey from the Ministry of Health and Population of Nepal in 2011, 28 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 49 stated that they had experienced violence from their partner at least once in their partnership. 14 percent had even experienced it in the last year.
The country ranks 115th in the Gender Inequality Index by the United Nations Development Program. The percentage of women in the age group from 20 to 49 who were first married or in union before the age of 18 is 48.5%.
The fertility rate has dropped a lot in the last decades and is 2.2 births per women now. The maternal mortality rate per 100,000 births is 258. The proportion of births attended by professional health personnel is only 55.6%.
The proportion of seats held by women in the National Parliament in Nepal is 30%. At the moment, the country has a female president, but the office mostly holds ceremonial status. In general, the number of women in powerful positions in politics and business is low.
While the gap between male and female literacy used to be very high, the country is moving to close that gap. The adult literacy rate for women is 65.7%, but the literacy rate of individuals between 15 and 24 years is 77.5%. Despite this progress, still a lot of work needs to be done in this field.
Please feel free to use this as a start for your own project background. Add or delete as necessary and apt for your own project. Please keep in mind that this is not the entire project background, you need to add more specific information to your own project and connect this information to your specific project context!
Best of luck!
really good looking for children and gender
Thank you!
This is a good work !
I am glad you found this helpful!
Today I read that suicide among Nepali women were highest among women between the ages of 15 & 49, and that nobody talks about it because it’s taboo. Do you think it just a really weird coincidence or the result of slanted statistics?
I mean, if the majority of the people gatjering the data are men or foreigners, how do we know that we can trust the numbers (for better or worse)? How do Nepali women feel about their roles?
Hello,
Glad you are discussing seriously about this difficult subject. I would have to see the original source before commenting, but 15-49 is an awfully wide age range which would likely be a problem in any such study. Also, it is difficult to confirm if the majority of researchers are men or foreigners. More and more these days, international development workers are beginning to understand the value of locally-lead initiatives.
But it sounds like this might be a great project! Let us know what questions you have for putting together a proposal!
