Sample Project Background-Zambia

By: Sharmistha Sharma

The project background is an important part of every proposal. It can be very similar to the project rationale or the project justification. It shows your donor that you did your homework and that your project is planned well. But where can you get the information and data for your project background? And how does one actually look like?

Here you have an example project background for Zambia. If you are planning or working in Zambia then you are welcome to use this blueprint. Be sure to add more specific information about your own project though, and add other relevant updated data according to the region and place.

Project Background of Zambia

The Republic of Zambia, a landlocked country situated in south-central Africa. Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe are the neighboring countries. The capital-Lusaka is in the south-central part of Zambia, with highest levels of urbanization in Africa.

The country’s population is 16,445,079 which is said to be tripled by 2050 due to the rapid population growth. The landlocked country has experienced rapid economic growth but still 54.4% population living under the poverty line. The density of population counts 22.995 sq./km. Moreover, the fertility rate is 4.9 births/woman, which is comparatively high with other countries.

About 56.5% population is living in the rural areas which result in the high infant and maternal mortality rate that follows 43.8 deaths per 1,000 live births and 224 deaths per 100,000 live births respectively. Along with this, the prevalence of stunting is found to be 40 %. Because of poor water treatments, air pollution, and high HIV AIDS prevalence,  the average life expectancy is 62.3 years.

The concern of state towards health facilities is the must. Poverty, Unemployment and unpredictable natural disasters always drag down the economic growth of Zambia. Indeed, agriculture is the main occupation but it only contributes 7.5% to the total $ 25.81 billion GDP. Due to the patriarchal society, the gender inequality ranked 125 and HDI ranked 144.

The business environment gradually progressing which scores 65.08 however the unemployment rate still remains 7.79%. The corruption rank of Zambia is 96 among 180 countries.

And this is why so many NGOs do daft projects in Zambia!!! If the ngo knows so little about the country they intend to work in they stay away. Ridiculous.
