Tips for Applying to The Habitats Trust Grants 2023 in India

The Habitats Trust (THT) Grants program is a program designed to support individuals and organizations working in the field in India to protect natural habitats and indigenous species. You can apply for the grant until the 31st of May 2023. There are different categories of the grant, ranging from roughly 35,000 to 14,000 USD.

What can be funded with the THT Grant program?

The THT grant program funds project that want to protect endangered species and habitats in India and support efforts of environmental conservation. THT defines natural habitats as areas composed of viable assemblages of flora and fauna species of native origin where human activity had not essentially modified an area’s primary ecological functions and species composition. The program has three types of grants:

Strategic Partnership Grants (around 35,000$): This grant is aimed at mid to large-sized organizations to cover running costs for projects in the field of conservation in India. The grant is supposed to enable the creation of a sustainable and replicable conservation model to address some of the key conservation issues in the country.

Lesser-Known Habitats Grant (around 20,000): This grant wants to support overlooked and unaddressed habitats in India, that need urgent conservation. These habitats often are connected to more known habitats and have a very important ecological function.

Lesser-Known Species Grant (around 14,000$): This grant is supposed to fund conservation efforts for lesser-known species in India. In the last years, a lot of funding has been geared towards just a couple of species (like tigers, elephants, rhinos, etc.), while others are almost forgotten. With this grant, the conservation of these crucial species should be addressed.

Who can apply for a THT Grant 2023 in India?

All organizations and individuals that work in the field of habitat protection are eligible to apply for one of the categories of the THT Grant. Keep in mind though that you should be able to show a track record of your work and that THT will look at your working history in great detail, so your organization should be established for some time. If it is not, entering a partnership with another organization might be a good idea.

THT Grant 2019 in India – What is the process?

The evaluation of applications will go through 3 rounds. In the first round, the application itself and the organizational background of the applicant will be judged. The application will be evaluated under the following criteria

If your proposal reaches the next level, the THT will conduct a field visit to confirm all the information given in the proposal and to be able to judge if the project is feasible. In the last round, three projects of every grant category will be presented before a jury that decides about acceptance.

It is stated again and again on the website that sustainability and scalability of the project are of key importance. If you want to make sure that your proposal impresses the THT committee, you need to have a very good sustainability plan in place and have thought in detail about ways to scale up your project in the future. For applying online, you can directly go to the website of the THT.
