Tips to apply for the Miss.Africa Digital Seed Fund Grant

The Miss.Africa Digital has announced a call for proposal for their Seed Funding Tech Initiative for women in Africa. The grant aims to support women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The award is of 5,000 US$ and the deadline for applications is July 2nd 2019. In this article, we will give you some tips on how to apply for this opportunity.

Who can apply for the Miss.Africa Digital Seed Fund Grant?

To be eligible for this opportunity, applicants must be current residents of an African country, including North and Sub-Saharan Africa. Applicants must be over 18 years old and can apply either as an individual or a representative of an NGO. They must have demonstrated leadership potential and must have shown their commitment to developing and contributing to a virtual community for supporting women and girls’ initiatives.

What can be funded?

With this grant, projects can be funded that to support women and girls in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields to launch or expand their own initiatives that will increase their digital opportunities in IT related training, jobs and leadership roles. The program is looking for initiatives that are scalable and can influence the lives of many women in the future.

Some examples of projects that could be funded are the following:

– Computer science workshops and trainings for women and girls
– Early incubation of female tech entrepreneurs
– Programming and app development training programs
– Hackathons and coding boot camps for girls

The chosen project will be funded with 5,000 US$, the two runner ups will receive 1,000 US$ each to support their initiatives.

How to apply for the Miss.Africa Digital Seed Fund Grant

To apply for this opportunity, interested individuals or organizations have to submit an Expression of Interest until the 3rd of July 2019. Applicants have to fill out an online form and send their EoI through the given email address by the deadline.

What to look out for?

This opportunity is focused on women, so when you apply, make sure that it is clear how specifically you will support women with your initiative. The application will be rated on its quality in the following aspects:

  • STEM: The application of the program/Initiative to promoting the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields
  • Innovation: How original, groundbreaking or creative is the app, website or service?
  • Impact: Has the program or initiative impacted numerous lives in meaningful ways within their locale?
  • Scalability: Does the program/initiative scale technically? What percentage of the designated population does it reach?
  • Entrepreneurship: Does the program have the ability to monetize itself or expand to solve local problems and create revenue opportunities.
  • Launch-readiness: If the program/ initiative has not been launched, is it ready to go live

Make sure that your application shines in these areas specifically to make a good impression and win points with the judges.
