Tips to apply to the African Culture Funds Grant program

The African Culture Fund has opened its call for applications for its grant program. The deadline for this opportunity is the 12th of October 2019 and organizations from all countries in Africa can apply. The grant supports projects from the fields of visual arts and performing arts which must be finished within the period of 18 months. The maximum amount one organization can apply for is US$ 10,000. 

Who can apply for the African Culture Fund Grant? 

The program is open for applications from organizations from all countries on the African continent. 

To be eligible, organizations need to be an African artist or cultural actor or from the African diaspora, an artistic or cultural organization or association established in Africa or cooperating on African projects with at least one African organization and having at least three years of experience. Furthermore, they need to be a member of an artistic or cultural organization or association and have legal status.

What can be funded with this grant?

This grant is divided into two lots – Lot 1 for the performing arts and Lot 2 for the visual arts. Within Lot 1, projects from the field of music, dance and theatre can be funded. Within Lot 2, the following areas can be funded:photography, digital art, decorative arts (textile art, design, marquetry…) as well as all pre-production, production, post-production, dissemination and distribution concerning the following cinematographic and audiovisual disciplines: Fiction / animation (short films, medium-length films, feature films or series); Documentaries (unitary or series); Art videos.

In general, the projects involved in this call are activities and projects of creation, production, and dissemination of works and capacity building in the field of performing and visual arts. 

The maximum amount one organization can apply for is US$ 10,000. 

How to apply to the African Culture Fund Grant program?

Applicants need to fill out the online form with the usual contents of a concept note that is given on the website. Furthermore, organizations and artists should submit supporting materials depending on the discipline they apply for. When a training component is included, the trainers have to submit their CV and the commitment of their participation. Makes sure to use the preferred way to transmit the files that are given on the website of the foundation. 

What to look out for

The application will be evaluated based on the following criteria: 

  • The originality/innovation/ creativity of the project or concept
  • The technical quality of the file
  • The financial quality of the project
  • The relevance/sustainability of the project or concept in relation to the African or regional context
